Canada’s Honda CBR125R Challenge will run for a 3rd consecutive season

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | Canada, MiniGPX-NEWS | Sunday 27 December 2009 9:47 pm

onda Canada and series organizers Professional Motorsport Productions have confirmed most of the details concerning the 2010 Honda CBR125R Challenge series, one of the National classes in the 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship series. 2010 marks the 30th year of Superbike Nationals in Canada, the tenth season of Parts Canada title sponsorship for the Nationals, and Honda Canada looks forward to another season of growth in year three of the CBR125R Challenge.

2010 Schedule

The Honda CBR125R Challenge was founded in 2007, with the goal of providing racers with a cost effective, production-oriented class for rider development. In 2010, the Honda CBR125R Challenge will comprise of ten events, staring with two rounds at the new ICAR venue in Mirabel, north of Montreal, Quebec, on May 28-30. The second weekend of racing will encompass three races on two tracks at Race City in Calgary, Alberta, June 25-27. Another triple header will take place at Mosport, again on the big track and the kart layout, July 9-11. The 2010 Honda CBR125R Challenge series finale is slated for Atlantic Motorsport Park in Nova Scotia, outside Halifax, with a double header on August 6-8.

Series organizers plan a CBR125R exclusive Official Track Day at the start of the 2010 season, sometime in May, at an Ontario venue. Activities will be open to riders 13 years of age or older, the same requirements applied to the National tour.

This Track Day/School event will offer an opportunity for Honda CBR125R racers to get back on track, and for new competitors to start their preparation for the upcoming season, including earning a competition licence. As well, street CBR125R riders will have a chance to try their machines on track in a controlled environment.

Last season, CBR125R Challenge competitors took part in a demonstration event during July’s Honda Toronto Indy. A similar arrangement is under discussion for the 2010 Honda Toronto Indy open-wheeled auto race weekend on the lakeshore.

Canadian National Mini RoadRacing Series

The Calgary and Mosport events will also serve as rounds for the Honda CBR125R contingent in the Canadian National Mini RoadRacing Series, organized by famed rider development experts, the Alberta Mini RoadRacing Association (AMRA.ca). There are six rounds in the AMRA National series for 2010: Martinsville, SK, May 22-23; Lumsden, SK, June 12-13; Calgary, June 24-27; Mosport, July 8-11; Chilliwack, B.C., July 31-Augsut 2 and Quesnel, B.C. on August 6-8.

2010 Rules Updates

The Honda CBR125R Challenge series will continue largely unchanged in 2010, with an emphasis on unmodified, identical, spec class single cylinder street-based machinery.

After reviewing rider and owner input from the last two seasons of racing, the Race Kit will now offer the following additional items for 2010:

1. Set-back foot peg plates and longer shift rod to increase ground clearance. Stock foot pegs and CBR125R passenger pegs will be allowed as before, and CBR600RR pegs are now also permitted.

2. Chain fin, mounted below the left arm of the swing arm to protect rear sprocket.

3. Optional front sprocket with 14 teeth, to supplement the stock 15 tooth front sprocket. The stock rear sprocket is still required.

The following clarifications have also been issued:

1. The stock front countershaft sprocket cover must be used;

2. The stock chain guard must be installed on the swing arm;

3. The stock, unmodified cooling system must be retained, with no tape on the radiator;

4. The black plastic cover on the top front of the fuel tank must be retained.

Further updates regarding the CBR125R Challenge will be posted during the winter û please watch the dedicated Honda Challenge area on the official Superbike site, cdnsuperbike.com, for details.

Peter Lenz back in action

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | MiniGP, MiniGPX-NEWS | Saturday 26 December 2009 2:06 am

Peter Lenz has nearly recovered from his May 31st, 2009 accident that saw his season come to an abrupt halt. The 12-year old Minigp and 125GP racer was back in action a few weeks ago at JenningsGP in Florida.

“It really felt great to be back on my 125. I missed it a lot,” commented Lenz. “My hand was giving me some grief but now I know what I need to work on for January.”

Peter is scheduled to return to racing in late January with either CCS or WERA depending on how his hand rehabilitation proceeds.

Interview: Brad Boucher

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | Interviews, MiniGPX-NEWS, SCMiniGP, WERA | Thursday 24 December 2009 6:15 pm

Name: Brad Boucher

Age: 10

Birthplace: Born in California, now living in Nashville, TN

Bikes: Honda RSF 150R

Website: ~http://www.bambamboucher.com~

MGPX: How did you get into bikes?

I saw one MotoGP race and was hooked.

MGPX: How long have you been racing?

I’ve been racing now for three and a half years.

MGPX: Has your riding style or approach to racing changed over the years?

Not really but I just started working with Ed Bargy and he is changing my style and showing me new things.

MGPX: Why do you race?

It’s fun and it also teaches me a lot about life.

MGPX: Did anyone inspire you to race?

Yes. My father Rossi and Nicky Hayden.

MGPX: Who is your favorite pro racer?

Without a doubt, Nicky Hayden.

MGPX: What is your favorite track?

I really enjoyed Buttonwillow in California.

MGPX: Who are your sponsors?

Honda of Cool Springs, Vortex Racing, Impact Safe-T Armor, Ed Bargy Racing School, PINHEADS, ATC Inc, and Rooster Racing.

MGPX: What teams are you on?

I’m new to this area so no teams yet.

MGPX: What clubs do you race with?

It is going to be WERA next year. Last year it was with SCMiniGP.

MGPX: What are your hobbies outside of riding?

I really enjoy playing football.

MGPX: Does you family support your riding?

Yes, a lot, my Dad pays for racing and my Mom and Dad both help me when if I crash.

MGPX: What is the coolest things about racing?

Rubbing and winning!

MGPX: One event really stands out about your racing?

Buttonwillow Semi Pro Jr race this year, I started on the back row, wheelied on the start and the bike shot across the track. The other riders were in turn 3 as I was getting back on the bike. I was mad at myself for crashing, I was riding my hardest, and on the last corner of the last lap, I passed second to take first.

MGPX: It looks like you did well with the SCMINIGP this year. Can you talk about that for a bit?

SCMiniGP taught me a lot. It’s not one of those groups where there’s only a couple people in your class, the NSR class usually had 12 or 15 riders per race. The people were so nice, it’s a great group to start with. I made a lot of friends there. I had battles going on with Andrew Zabzyer, Kenny Anderson and Rayce Sabo all year long. It was my toughest year of racing so far. I really had to work hard to win the races I won. The 1st place Semi Pro Jr Championship trophy is my favorite because it was the hardest to win.

MGPX: What did you think about being named an 2009 Next Moto Champion Honorable Mention?

I like the free stuff that we get, the safermoto vest, Vortex hats & shirts. All 14 riders are champions and it feels good to be a part of that group.

MGPX: Now that you retired your NSR and have ridden your RSF150R, any thoughts on the bikes?

Big change in speed, weight, throttle, breaking. The RS is taller and handles differently than the NSR. I like the 150 better because it’s so much faster.

MGPX: Do you miss your NSR at all?

Not really, it was a step along the way, it was cool that John Gessner got my bike. I hope it helped him like it helped me.

MGPX: Your dad said you moved all the way across the country, did you meet any kid racers yet?

Yes, Palmer Kling from Alabama, he is the same age as me and very fast.

MGPX: So, are they faster than the kids out West?

I’m on a different bike now so it’s hard to say.

MGPX: Have you started thinking about what you are going to do in 2010?

WERA Mid-Central, which is 8 races. I’d like to do the Southeast but it’s 14 and I have to wait and see what my Dad says.

MGPX: Any plans to travel to race?

Most tracks around here are 2 – 6 hours away.

MGPX: Who is your biggest supporter?

My Dad and Ed Bargy.

MGPX: Where do you see yourself in five years from now?

When I’m 15, probably on a 600 on my way to race in AMA.

MGPX: How has your Dad helped you in your riding?

Helped a lot, he pays for it and just lets me do my thing. I can skip sessions and play with the other kids if I want, he says it’s up to me.

MGPX: Of all the riders you race with who do you have the most fun with or who do you look forward to racing?

In 2009 in Semi Pro Jr. I really had fun racing with Andrew Zaybzar, when I was on the 50 I had a blast racing with that jokester Rayce Sabo, that is one goofy, funny dude.

MGPX: What is your favorite song?

Baba O’reilly by The Who, we always listen to it on the way to a race.

MGPX: What kind of shoes do you wear?

NIKE classic dunks

MGPX: Who cuts your hair?

I’m letting it grow out, again.

MGPX: How often does your family read MiniGPX.com?

All the time, it’s all about our world.

MGPX: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us good luck with the rest of the year!

2009 Next Moto Champion: Hunter Coffin

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | MiniGPX-NEWS | Tuesday 22 December 2009 2:58 pm

14 year old Hunter Coffin and his family moved from Arizona to California for one reason; because he wanted to be a motorcycle racer. Hunter has been racing with the largest, most competitive club in California, SCminiGP. In 2008 he took the 1st place Championship in Formula GP with a 75% winning percentage. He was the one to beat and things didn’t get any easier in 2009. For those that were able to see Coffin race this year, you know that the competition was talented and fierce. If Hunter ever made a mistake, they were there to capitalize. Hunter lived under constant pressure. If you can’t handle that type of pressure, it will eat you alive. In the 2009 season, Hunter Coffin rose to the occasion race, after race, after race. In the super fast, Pro Extreme class, Hunter Coffin won more races than all other riders combined and took home SCminiGP’s “Shifter of the Year” award. Hunter was on the top of the podium 67% of the time. In the Pro GP class, Hunter was second in points for the season but finished in first place more than any other rider. From BMX to pocket bikes to a RS150, Hunter Coffin has a history of winning races, a history of being a Champion and we are proud to honor him as the 2009 Next Moto Champion. Congratulations Hunter, we’re proud of you and look forward to having you represent Next Moto Champion in 2010.

Hunter Coffin is supported by Outlaw racing, Youth Road Racing USA, Next Moto Champion, Rooster racing, Tayo Motors, GP Bound, Lay’D Out Location Support Services, Mookie Wilkerson and of course Mom and Dad. See more at ~http://www.huntercoffin.com~
