NSF100 Trophy series concludes

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | MiniGPX-NEWS | Tuesday 24 November 2009 3:03 pm

Riders in the final round of the NSF100 HRC Trophy mini-bike series were in for a surprise at the Motegi circuit yesterday when they found themselves racing wheel-to-wheel with HRC Vice President Shuhei Nakamoto, along with former grand prix riders Tady Okada and Shinichi Ito. Mr Nakamoto was part of an HRC team competing in a special four-hour endurance race at the circuit, which hosts the Japanese round of the MotoGP World Championship. An amazing 86 teams and 420 riders were taking part in the one-off race, all on Honda mini-bikes.

The HRC team was made up of Mr Nakamoto, HRC Directors Seiki Ishii and Tomoaki Nagayama, HRC test rider Okada – who usually spends his track time testing and developing Honda’s RC212V MotoGP challenger – and Honda racing veteran Ito. While the former Honda Grand Prix riders were inevitably keen to find the limits of the Repsol Honda branded NSF100, the HRC bosses were happy to simply experience the 100cc machine on which many aspiring racers begin their careers. The HRC team completed 105 laps and came home in a steady but respectably 57th place out of 80 finishers.

Apart from the fun of the endurance race, the serious business of the day were the two eight-lap NSF100 sprint races. These were the final rounds of the NSF100 HRC Trophy Championship – a one-make mini-bike series organised by Honda to promote affordable grass-roots competition and give the widest range of young riders the chance to begin racing. In 2009 there were 102 races held across Japan, with each circuit hosting its own championship. The NSF100 Trophy is also held in European countries such as Belgium, Italy, Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Indeed, at the race in Motegi today, the top young NSF100 competitors from the European championships were taking part. Thirteen-year-old Andrea Locatelli, winner of the Italian NSF100 Trophy extreme, came home in 17th place, while Bo Bendsneijder (also 13) winner of the Netherlands series was 20th. Jesper Hubner from Sweden and Patrick Pulkkinen from Finland (both 13) placed in 22nd and 25th places.

The NSF100 is HRC’s purpose-built production racing model with a 4-stroke, air-cooled single cylinder engine.

Shuhei Nakamoto, HRC Vice President: “It was really good fun to take part in this race today with my colleagues and with our professional riders. We probably could have gone a little faster, but we were here simply to enjoy the race rather than go for glory! For us today was an important occasion to see how the NSF100 machine is used by the riders across a wide age range, and to see how we can develop these type of race events in future.”

Tady Okada, HRC Test Rider: “I had a good start today and was able to come from behind and battle for second place. Since Yuki (Takahashi) was also participating, we had an exciting race for the last 10 laps. We do not have so much opportunity to race with other riders like this, so I had a lot of fun today!”

Shinichi Ito, former Grand Prix racer for Honda: “This was a little different from the racing that I normally do and I really enjoyed it. Some of the younger riders are very professional on the NSF100, and they also fit the machine’s small size very well, so they were fast in the corners and it was difficult to overtake them!”

Interview: Outlaw Racing’s Jason Aguilar

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | Interviews, MiniGPX-NEWS | Saturday 14 November 2009 3:55 am

Name: Jason Aguilar

Age: 13

Birthplace: Southern California

Bikes: 1994 Honda RS92, 2004 Honda NSR50R, 2008 Thumpstar TDX

Website: ~http://www.aguilarracing.com~

MGPX: How did you get into bikes?

My dad used to work for Honda’s finance company, and he started bringing home posters of some of the racers. I really liked a poster of Nicky Hayden dragging his elbow on his RC51, and after that I wanted to be a racer, but I had never ridden anything but a bicycle. In 2006, we were at the AMA Superbike Race in Fontana when I saw the SCminiGP tent. They had a pocketbike and a NSR50. I took off running toward the tent and forgot about my dad. By the time he caught up to me I had talked to Josiah Taulbee about taking lessons. My dad signed me up for my birthday and that was the first time I ever rode a pocketbike.

MGPX: How long have you been racing?

Almost 3 years now.

MGPX: Has your riding style or approach to racing changed over the years?

Yes. I used to hang off as much as I could to drag my knee. Now, I seem to go faster by leaning the bike more and my body less.

MGPX: Do ride bikes other your road bikes?

No.

MGPX: Why do you race?

I love the rush of speed, the friends I have made at the track, and winning of course.

MGPX: Did anyone inspire you to race?

Not really. My dad was a surfer, not a racer. I don’t come from a racing family. It is just something that I am driven to do.

MGPX: Who is your favorite pro racer?

Nicky Hayden

MGPX: Who is your favorite youth racer?

Me.

MGPX: What is your favorite track?

So far, Streets of Willow. But I am really looking forward to running at Laguna Seca.

MGPX: Who are your sponsors?

Outlaw Racing

Tayomotors

Fulmer Helmets – They made he some custom fluorescent orange helmets this year to match my bikes. They are awesome.

Thumpstar

UNI Filters

Impact Safe-T Armor

Motorex

AXO

Vortex Racing

Morris Chiropractic

SixSixOne

Mesa Hose

Cycle Gear

Josh Bartnik Suspension

Aruba Sport Sunglasses

Fuel Clothing

MGPX: What team are you on?

Outlaw Racing. Mookie Wilkerson has been very supportive in helping my development this year. My Team name for endurance races is called Poison Dart Frog Racing.

MGPX: How did you end up on that team?

Mookie has been helping a lot of kids, so I asked him if I could be on the Outlaw Racing Team.

MGPX: How does your team help you?

Mookie works with me on my lines and how to set up passes. A lot of my friends are on the Team, and we all support each other.

MGPX: What clubs do you race with?

SCminiGP and M1GP

MGPX: What are your hobbies outside of riding?

Riding my bicycle and skateboard, and playing xbox.

MGPX: Does you family support your riding?

My dad works on all my bikes and takes me to the track on his days off. My grandma and grandpa live in Gilroy, CA and come to a lot of my races. When they do, we get to stay in their motorhome.

MGPX: What is the coolest things about racing?

The speed!

MGPX: How did the 2008 season go?

In 2008, I won the SCminiGP Semi-Pro Junior Pocketbike Championship. I won the Numero Uno award as SCminiGP’s top pocketbike racer. I finished 2nd in NSR Cup in my first year riding shifters. I finished 3rd in 50 Light, and I won my last 2 races when I started riding in Thumpstar GP.

My Team finished 2nd in 50 Stock in the M1GP 8 Hour Endurance Race. I won my first time out at Streets of Willow in the CMRRA race in 50 Stock.

MGPX: How have been things going so far in 2009?

I am undefeated in SCminiGP Thumpstar GP, and won the Championship last weekend. I am 3rd in MiniGP and MiniGP Youth. I am 5th in Pro GP, but I have had problems with my RS92 all season long. The only time it ran right was when I won the M1GP race at Willow this year, but it was still not running quite right. Also, my Team won the 50 Stock class of the M1GP 4 Hour Endurance Race this year.

MGPX: Have you started thinking about what you are going to do in 2010?

We are going to run SCminiGP Pro GP and Pro Extreme. I hope to get in some track days with SCminiGP’s association with Fasttrack Riders. I also hope to do some WERA races. I was a control rider for M1GP last year and that was really fun. I hope I can do more of that next year.

MGPX: Any plans to travel to race?

I hope so. I want to go to as many different tracks as I can.

MGPX: Who is your biggest supporter?

My dad.

MGPX: Where do you see yourself in five years from now?

Hopefully, in Europe in Moto2 getting ready for MotoGP.

MGPX: How has your dad helped you in your riding?

He is not a racer, but he gets me to the track and keeps my bikes running.

MGPX: Of all the riders you race with who do you have the most fun with or who do you look forward to racing? Who is your strongest competitor?

Anthony Alonso has been my toughest competition. We raced last year on pocketbikes and NSRs. Now we are on faster bikes, but the competition between us is really intense. He is wicked fast on an NSR.

MGPX: What is your favorite movie? Why?

Faster. That is what I want to do.

MGPX: How often does your family read MiniGPX.com?

We check MiniGPX all the time.

MGPX: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us good luck with the rest of the year!

KTM’s new concept road bike… 125cc 4-stroke of fun

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | MiniGPX-NEWS | Tuesday 10 November 2009 1:41 pm

The developers at KTM don’t have to learn about being consistent û it is a part of their natural daily creative process. Together with the company’s enthusiastic customers, the Duke, Super Duke, RC8R and Adventure are all proof of this philosophy. Now this same dynamic is also evident in a smaller displacement bike segment with the introduction of a range of 125 cc products that have been one hundred percent developed at the company headquarters in Mattighofen, Austria. The four-valve cylinder head, water cooling, fuel injection, two overhead cam shafts and 15 hp all demonstrate the desire for the highest level of technological development. The latticed tubular steel frame is the guarantee of perfect riding fun. As always, the very succinct KTM appearance comes from the extremely creative Kiska design team. High quality suppliers like WP Suspension and Brembo are the guarantee of premium quality components throughout. Coming with individual design possibilities, these completely newly constructed motorcycles are a breath of fresh air for the segment.
