8-year old Hayes wins six SMRRC championships

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | MiniGPX-NEWS, SMRRC | Wednesday 31 October 2007 3:59 pm

Vision Hayes wrapped up his season at the Stockton Mini Road Racing Clubs’ last race of 2007 on October 28 where he concentrated on bringing home championships instead of going for that days’ race wins.

Vision played it smart and won all six class championships that he contested throughout the year and won the overall club championship in the process. Vision turned 8 a couple of months ago, making him the youngest rider in club history to win any type of championship making his accomplishments all that more noteworthy.

Vision and his family would like to acknowledge that this could not have been done without the support of his sponsors and the help of many people close to him including Matt Myers, Dan Caldwell and Mario Pinto.

It’s not impossible to make it to the top step of the podium afterall

This photo expresses the emotion a lot of the grown men feel when they are able to make it to the checkered flag first. After a season long battle with the other two riders shown, Josiah Taulbee made it to the top step.

For all the grumps (grown-ups) out there, enjoy the moment with Josiah … a man who like a lot of us who would trade 20 years of life experience for 60 pounds of power advantage. :)

Ear protection for little people

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | MiniGPX-NEWS, Product Review | Friday 26 October 2007 2:03 pm

Not all ears are made the same. In the case of junior riders, they have more sensitive hearing and run the risk of early damage to their hearing when exposed to motorcycle related noise. Some race bikes have exhaust notes that exceed 100 db, levels loud enough to mess things up.

After looking around we found that there are several junior ear plugs available. No need to try and smash an adult sized plug in a little ear. You can buy Mack’s SafeSound Jrs online at Drugstore.com for cheap.

Jason Aguilar wins the Blata Cup Championship

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | MiniGPX-NEWS, Pocketbike, SCMiniGP, United States | Wednesday 24 October 2007 11:29 pm

In his first season of racing, as well as his first year of riding, 11 year old Jason Aguilar captures the 2007 Blata Cup Championship. It was only twelve months ago that Jason Aguilar first learned to ride a motorcycle at SCminiGP’s Youth Program course. Now, in the most competitive Blata Cup season ever, the SixSixOne, Tayomotors.com, and Morris Chiropractic sponsored rider, sealed his first championship with his second place finish. Although there is one race remaining on November 11, 2007 at California Speedway in Fontana, CA, Jason’s 28 point lead sealed the championship. “I am excited to see Jason take this championship. Just a year ago, the program was teaching him how to ride, but his effort and dedication have earned him the Cup. SCminiGP is proud to have helped create this opportunity, and hopes we continue to open new doors for Jason’s racing career!” stated SCminiGP founder, Josiah Taulbee.

On Saturday, Jason led every Blata Cup practice and set fast lap in each session. On Sunday practice, Jason once again set the pace. Jason won the heat race to capture pole position with Gabe Hernandez III finishing second.

It was another tough battle in the Blata Cup main race as Jason and 7 year old phenomenon, Gabe Hernandez III pulled away from the rest of the field. Jason, got a great start, but little Gabe accelerated to the lead going into the first corner. Jason pulled ahead with an inside move coming out of the first corner, but Gabe’s acceleration pulled him past Jason again. Jason put another inside move on Gabe and pulled out to a 5 bike length lead coming back onto the main straight, but Gabe once again caught Jason down the straight. The next several laps continued with more of the same, Jason catching Gabe in the corners, with Gabe pulling away in the straights. Finally, on the last lap, Gabe was able to gap Jason when they went through traffic. Gabe and Jason were the first to congratulate each other as they pulled off the track, but were quickly joined by their families, friends, and other riders in celebrating their respective wins.

In a very exciting season, featuring 4 different race winners so far, Jason was able to wrap up the Blata Cup Championship with his consistency. 3 wins and 5 seconds in 8 races were enough to secure the Championship early. The Championship win earns Jason the Factory BlataUSA sponsored ride in the Semi-Pro Junior division next season. Jason hopes to follow in the footsteps of other SCminiGP Blata Cup Champions such as Drew Price and Austin DeHaven who have successfully transitioned into 600cc and 125cc race winners on the big tracks.

Peter Lenz wraps up season with four wins

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | MiniGP, MiniGPX-NEWS, Motard, United States | Thursday 18 October 2007 5:16 pm

Young young gun Peter Lenz was back at the racetrack this past weekend taking four wins as he wrapped up his 2007 race season at the Mac Track.

While he was sidelined for the past three months with a broken right arm Peter grew enough that his riding gear was tight in all the wrong places. With things being a little tight Peter wasn’t able to move around on the bike the way he would have liked, and his right hand was still not 100%, he still managed to ride within a second of his record setting pace set earlier this year, the competition didn’t slow down while Peter was out making for some tough races.

“The other riders really stepped up their game, now we are going to have to start pushing the limits,” explained Peter. “It was nice to get back on the bike and ride. My back and hand was sore from not riding, but I was happy to just do what I love, ride.”

As race seasons wrapped up across the US a shortage of 12″ Bridgestone tires required Peter to run recycled tires. He ran the weekend on tires originally used in April.

Even with roached tires he took his Honda NSR50 to a solid win in Stock 50 and a hard fought second in Mod 50. In MiniGP50 he crashed and was pinned under his bike bringing out a red flag, after being checked out by the onsite medical staff he finished the in progress race. Even though he was off his normal pace and fighting tire slip all weekend he took his KTM 65 to wins in the 65, FX and 85 classes.

2008 will see Peter ride an RS125/85 in MiniGP and WERA West races and at this time next year rides on a 125 GP, he is currently looking for 2008 support.

Thank you to all the clubs that welcomed Peter as he traveled this year and to all the people and sponsors that provided help enabling Peter to be as successful as he was. Peter finishes the 2007 season with 4 national wins, 30 regional wins, and an additional 14 podiums.

Canadian national series wrap up

Pitster Pro Canadian National Mini RoadRacing Series:

CMA National Event

Round #5 Abbotsford, BC

Hosted by the PCMRC

October 6-7, 2007

Mini Roadracers from across Canada and the Northern United States made there way to Abbotsford, BC to make an appearance at the final round of the 2007 Pitster Pro Canadian National Mini RoadRacing Series.

Round # 5 hosted by the Pacific Coast Mini Roadracing Club (PCMRC) took place at Tradex facility -the only nationally sanctioned parking lot raceway.

Weather was to play a huge part in the weekends festivities as forecasted wind warning of 60-80 km/h and rain warnings of 60-90 mm made their presence felt after a brief morning respite. Mini roadracers are troopers and ride in all kinds of weather, but as we compete on motorcycles and not jet skies the second series of class races in the afternoon were cancelled when 2″ of standing water covered the playing field. Despite the dire weather predictions, race day started out dry and athletes were ready to race. Several #1 Titles were in contention, adrenalin was high and racers were ready for the challenge.

The Spec Super Sport class title was in contention between 17 year old Geoff Gerbrandt and 11 year old Bodie Edie. Gerbrandt carried a one point lead going into the final round and knew he would have to work hard to keep his Saskatchewan teammate behind him. Local legend Roland Stuart Smith took it upon himself to school the two youths with his home track advantage, astonishing speed and confidence on his NSR 50RR, successfully keeping the youths behind him. Final event results saw Stuart-Smith 1st; Edie 2nd and Gerbrandt 3rd. Overall season results saw elementary student Bodhi Edie earn the CMA National Title with a one point advantage.

The Spec Under 21 Class was another class that the two Saskatchewan youths saw themselves in direct competition for the title. A third youngster, 12 year old Conner Matthews, Calgary, AB was also in position to take the #1 title. Only 1 point separated Gerbrandt and Matthews but Edie made sure his presence was felt with a 6 point deficit behind Matthews. Green flag: Matthews took the early lead but the tricky corners of the Tradex facility over challenged the youngster and a spectacular high side ended Matthews’ fight for the title. The torrential weather chose the red flag moment to unleash its fury. After the restart Gerbrandt proved the winner, followed by Edie and Peter Lenz, Mini GPX brought in third. With Gerbrandts’ win and the 15 points earned, he finished the season with a hard earned 10 point lead over Edie in second, Matthews retained third place.

Formula Under 21 also saw Gerbrandt and Edie vying for the CMA Title with 5 points separating the top two finalists. Riding against the forces of nature, Gerbrandt cleaned up the competition and earned himself his second 2007 CMA National Title.

Perhaps the closest point’s competition going into the final round of the 2007 season was that of the 10-14 Novice Class: less than three points separated the top five top contenders. Points leader with 18 points Sebastian Sim, Edmonton, AB lead second place 11 year old Allyssa Fox, Calgary, AB by one point. Closely followed by a three way points tie between Christopher Furtado-Vose, Victoria, BC, Christopher Mah, Edmonton, AB and Brooke Ham, White City, SK. The long trek to Abbotsford eliminated Ham from the competition, and Mah no longer eligible to compete in the novice class left three finalists ready to battle it out on the track. Unfortunately the weather played a major factor for point’s leader Sebastian as his 40 cc Pocketbike encountered mechanical difficulties leaving incumbents Fox and Furtado-Vose in contention for the coveted youth CMA Title. Young Fox with no fear of the rain ran smooth, breaking late and coming out of the corners heavy on the gas and earned herself the top podium position and the CMA National Title. Furtado-Vose who stood up well to the challenges of the day earned himself second place.

B.C. favorite Motard class was the only class that ran twice as under National rules the Formula Open class separates the Formula GP and Motard machines. Local hero racer Paul Ludwig on his new ride the Barker Bros Cycles sponsored TM Motard earned the top of the podium, closely followed by organizer extraordinaire Brian Enns in second. The combined Formula GP class saw the Motards finish at the front of the pack. #96 Bart Brown earned the checkers but with a mid pack finish in the first heat the overall winner for the day was Ludwig, Brown in second and long time member Ryan Gosling earned a prestigious third place. Overall season standings would see AMRA member Ian McWhirter with a huge points lead, followed by Paul Ludwig and rounding off the top three, a proud Brian Enns.

The Pitster Pro Formula Thunder Class saw talent Geoff Gerbrandt and his TTR 150 running with a rear slick in the rain. Despite standing water on the track the youth parted the waters and ran outstanding lap times. Not far behind Bodie Edie earned a second place followed by veteran Rob Haynes. Despite Gerbrandts spectacular showing, his teammate and nemesis Edie held Gerbrandt off the top rung with a two point lead at the end of the season earning his second CMA Title of the 2007 Pitster Pro Series!

Special thanks to our sponsors PITSTERPRO, host club Pacific Coast Mini RoadRacing Club (PCMRC) and all the volunteers. Of particular commendation, a huge thumbs up to Brian Ens for all his efforts on his first run at event organizer! Great job! Rumor has it he is trying to secure Chilliwack Kart Facility for the 2008 season.

Hayes check in from SoCal

Posted by MiniGPX Archives | M1GP, MiniGP, MiniGPX-NEWS | Tuesday 16 October 2007 6:53 pm

Vision Hayes raced in five classes at the CMRRA round #9 which were held at the Willow Springs Kart Track in Rosamond,CA on October 14,taking two class wins, a second, a fourth and a fifth.

Vision was riding very well during the weekend and was looking to place higher than he did,but lowsided two times on the same corner in two different classes while on his kx65. He got up both times to finish the races, but lost too much time to challenge for the front. He adjusted his approach to that corner for the latter races and was able to secure better finishes which we took as one positive from our weekend.

Some more positives were that the other competitors, especially the kids, really have stepped up their game and there was some great racing going on all day. We also saw some new kids come out to race along with Ryan Matter making his return to the club after being injured earlier in the year. The best part for me personally, (Visions’ Dad), was the good nature of all of the kids parents. What a blast!
